Piano Magic
Low Birth Weight

Bill Cohen

Otherworldy psychedelia that's more childlike than demented.

For some reason, those involved in the current British pysch revival have a knack for crafting billowing pop songs while their American brethren seem intent on pondering their navels. Of course, there are exceptions, but bands like Piano Magic and Hood have a songwriting pedigree that encompasses both the meandering psych that is currently passe among artists like Fuxa and Transient Waves, and the warped pop sensibility that renders their work more compelling than the aforementioned bands. In fact, Low Birth Weight draws upon everything from the animation of The Brothers Quay and krautrock to Bark Psychosis and bubblegum pop. All of which gives Piano Magic a surreal, otherworldly quality; one that's lacking from most current psych outside of Volcano The Bear and Tower Recordings. On the surface, Low Birth Weight's melodies possesses a childlike quality much like nursery rhymes as Piano Magic coo and sigh you to sleep, but there is an oppressive weight to their music that drags you down much like Joy division or Disco Inferno (Whose "Waking Up" is covered here). Ultimately, Piano Magic are a walking contradiction that is sweet and pleasant on the outside, but sickly and depressing at it's core.
